The predecessor to the University of Hokkaido, and built in 1878 as an extension Sapporo Agricultural College, the clock tower has become the quintessential symbol of Sapporo. Located in the very heart of the city, the clock tower's bells have rung for more than 120 years (longer than any other clock tower in Japan), and the building itself has been established as an important national cultural asset. A destination for many tourists, the grounds offer a commemorative photo spot for the picture of a lifetime.

Known by the familiar name Akarenga or "red brick", the former Hokkaido government building is an important national cultural asset. The building is lit up every night from sunset until 9 P.M., and takes on an entirely different elegance from that seen during the day. A prime example of European architecture during the Meiji Era, the historical rooms of Akarenga, including those of the Secretary of State and Governor are open to the public.

Spanning 1.5 kilometers from the Sapporo Television Tower at West 1-chome all the way to West 12-chome, and running east-west through the center of the city, Odori Park is truly an oasis of flowers and green for those that call Sapporo home. The park also serves as the main stage for large events throughout the year. The Lilac Festival kicks off summer in Sapporo, followed by beer gardens later in July and August, while winter sees the park hosting both the White Illumination light extravaganza and the world famous Sapporo Snow Festival.

Susukino is Sapporo's 24-hour non-stop playground. The largest entertainment district north of Tokyo, Susukino is host to more than 4,500 businesses ranging from ramen noodle shops to sushi restaurants to bars and clubs. Whether partying until dawn or taking in a hot spring, enjoy Sapporo's long nights to the fullest in this well patrolled and safe playground.

Nijo Market...Sapporo's Kitchen! A popular shopping spot among tourists, featuring fresh seafood and more at market prices from nearly 60 vendors. In addition to fresh fish & crab and dried & finished products, the bounties of Hokkaido's wide-open spaces are also on display, such as melons, potatoes, and corn. In addition, the market features several food stalls and many vendors can ship your purchase.

Originally built as a part of the former Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station in 1959, the Sapporo Hitsuji ga Oka Observatory is a wonderful spot for taking in all of Sapporo and the Ishikari Plain. The observatory's symbol, a statue of Dr. William S. Clark, features his famous words, "Boys, be ambitious!" The pastoral grounds also feature a popular spot for commemorative photos, a rest house, and a souvenir stand.

The all-weather Sapporo Dome is one of Sapporo's newest additions, opening in June of 2001 near the Hitsuji ga Oka Observatory. Featuring the world's first movable soccer pitch, the eyes of the world were on the Sapporo Dome as it hosted several high profile matches during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. From the dome's 53-meter high observation deck, one can see not only the layout of Sapporo, but Ishikari Bay as well. Restaurant and souvenir store on-site.

Known as the "Living Room" of Sapporo, it's said that the area got its start as a hot spring resort in 1866, when Jozan Miizumi, a monk-in-training, discovered the springs in a ravine at the upper reaches of the Toyohira River. Hot spring and resort hotels dot the main road that lines the bank of the river, but enjoying an occasional hot spring throughout the four seasons in Jozankei is just one of many charms. The ravine is also renowned for its glorious autumn foliage.
