The predecessor to the University of Hokkaido, and built in 1878 as an extension Sapporo Agricultural College, the clock tower has become the quintessential symbol of Sapporo. Located in the very heart of the city, the clock tower's bells have rung for more than 120 years (longer than any other clock tower in Japan), and the building itself has been established as an important national cultural asset. A destination for many tourists, the grounds offer a commemorative photo spot for the picture of a lifetime.

Known by the familiar name Akarenga or "red brick", the former Hokkaido government building is an important national cultural asset. The building is lit up every night from sunset until 9 P.M., and takes on an entirely different elegance from that seen during the day. A prime example of European architecture during the Meiji Era, the historical rooms of Akarenga, including those of the Secretary of State and Governor are open to the public.

riginally built as a part of the former Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station in 1959, the Sapporo Hitsuji ga Oka Observatory is a wonderful spot for taking in all of Sapporo and the Ishikari Plain. The observatory's symbol, a statue of Dr. William S. Clark, features his famous words, "Boys, be ambitious!" The pastoral grounds also feature a popular spot for commemorative photos, a rest house, and a souvenir stand.

On a sunny day you can see all the way to Ishikari Bay. The Hokkaido University Campus,whilst being located in the center of downtown Sapporo just four minutes on foot from the hotel, has a vast amount of preserved nature, as well as historical monuments. The university which opened in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, has a long standing history, with over four million historically valuable artifacts and materials that are displayed in the museum on campus. The statue of Professor Clark, the first vice president of the Sapporo Agricultural College, stands near the Koga Auditorium, and is a favorite photo spot for visitors. The lush campus is beautiful in every season, with the cherry blossoms in spring, the greenery in summer, bright colors in fall, and in winter it is a snowy wonderland. Just 10 minutes on foot south of the campus is the university's botanical gardens, which preserve and nurture a portion of primary forests, and all that lives within. Besides wandering through the oasis of the city, there are greenhouses and displays of important cultural assets that you can view.

Some of the competitions for the Sapporo Winter Olympics of 1972 were held at Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium. The summit is an observatory where visitors can stand at the same eye level as the ski jumpers and take in the view of Sapporo city, Ishikari Plains and Ishikari Bay. It is one of the popular scenic spots of the area. The stadium is an all-weather facility, so you can view practice anytime of the year. Not only is the view from the top of the jump exciting, but the view from the bottom looking up is also powerful and awesome. The Winter Sports Museum at the foot of the jump displays important historical materials and a simulator that allows visitors to vicariously enjoy ski jumping.

Moerenuma Park was designed by world renowned Isamu Noguchi, who had a vision of designing a park that was one enormous sculpture. Over the 200 hectares of park are hills, fountains, a glass pyramid and other artistic features that were carefully placed according to Noguchi's careful calculations, which make the park beautiful from every vantage point. The 360 degree panoramic view from the top of the play mountain at an elevation of 62 meters is especially impressive and very moving.
