Sapporo Clock Tower This Sapporo landmark was built in 1878 as a training ground for Sapporo Agricultural College, which later became a part of Hokkaido University. Nestled among the buildings of downtown Sapporo, it is Japan's oldest clock tower, which has been ringing its bell for over 120 years and has been designated a national Important Cultural Property. Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Red Brick Office) Nicknamed the "Red Brick Office", this building has been designated a national Important Cultural Property. The area is lit up from sunset to 9 p.m., transforming the area completely compared to the daytime. The building is open to the public, and you can see the rooms where the past directors and governors used to work. The Western style of the building is unique to the Meiji period around the turn of the 20th century. - Access

Odori Park The park stretches 1.5km from Sapporo TV Tower to the Former Sapporo Court of Appeals. It acts as an oasis for Sapporo's residents, with flowers and greenspaces filling it from east to west. It's the main venue for the city's biggest seasonal events, such as the Lilac Festival in early summer and the Beer Garden in summer, as well as the White Illumination and Snow Festival in winter. - Access

Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill This scenic spot offers a panoramic view of Sapporo and the Ishikari Plain. It was opened as a public viewing area in 1959 on a section of land once used as a Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The symbol of the observatory is a statue of Dr. William S. Clark, known for his quote: "Boys, be ambitious." Hokkaido University Located in the heart of Sapporo, the campus of Hokkaido University is home to both historical buildings and wide green spaces. Its long history dates back to 1876, when it opened as Sapporo Agricultural College, and the museum holds over 4 million precious exhibits and specimens. A statue of Dr. William S. Clark, the school's first vice president, is located next to the Furukawa Memorial Hall and is also a popular tourist attraction. The campus has lush nature that can be enjoyed with the changing of the seasons, from the cherry blossoms in spring and green grass of summer to the leaves of autumn and blankets of snow in the winter. A roughly 10-minute walk south of the university will take you to its botanical garden, an urban oasis where you can admire the treasured pristine forests of Hokkaido and Important Cultural Properties on display in the greenhouse.

Sapporo TV Tower The Sapporo TV Tower was built to coincide with the beginning of television broadcasting in the city. The 147.2m-tall structure is located on the bank of the Sosei River running north and south through the city. It's also on the eastern end of the 105m-wide and 1.5km-long Odori Park, a greenbelt spanning east to west through the heart of Sapporo. A complete view of the city can be seen from the 90m-high observation deck, which also makes for great photo ops. - Access

Botanic Garden, Hokkaido University This urban oasis is located across from the Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo. The 13.3ha park is home to giant Japanese elm trees, harkening back to how Sapporo looked before it was developed. Some 4,000 types of plants are cultivated here, such as beautiful flowers to enjoy in the spring and the vibrant leaves of autumn. There is also a Northern Peoples Museum and another museum where you can see valuable artifacts from the settlement of Hokkaido, as well as the indigenous people's lives and culture. - Access

Historical Village of Hokkaido “Kaitaku no mura” This open-air museum is home to buildings that were constructed all over Hokkaido from the mid-1800s to early 1900s and then relocated, restored, and reconstructed on this 54.2ha site. The entire place serves as an exhibit, and from mid-April to late November, Japan's only horse-drawn trolley is active. In the winter season from December to March, horse-drawn sleighs run throughout the grounds on weekends, holidays, and during the Sapporo snow festival, weekdays too. This exhibit allows you to experience the knowledge and work of those who pioneered Hokkaido as each structure transports you back to that time in history.

Shiryokan (Former Sapporo Court of Appeals) The Shiryokan holds significant cultural value as one of the few buildings in Japan made with Sapporo soft stone. It was officially designated as a tangible cultural property in March 2018. The building was originally built in 1926 to be the Sapporo Court of Appeal, and reopened as the Shiryokan when the court relocated in 1973. It holds the Sapporo International Art Festival (SIAF) Lounge, where visitors can view exhibits related to the festival, as well as the Criminal Courtroom Exhibition Room, the Hiroshi Oba Memorial Room, and the Urban History Exhibition Room. - Access

Hokkaido Jingu (Hokkaido Shrine) Hokkaido Jingu is a shrine dating back over 100 years, when Hokkaido was first given its current name. The shrine's precincts cover about 180,000m2 and are a popular cherry blossom viewing area, beloved by the local residents. Animals, such as the Ezo red squirrel and Ezo red fox, can also be encountered while enjoying the breathtaking scenery with the Maruyama mountain in the background. - Access

Otaru Canal This waterway was built to make transportation to and from Otaru Port more efficient as it grew into the gateway for the development of Hokkaido. It stretches a total of 1,140m, and its width along Highway 17 is 20m. Its northern section, known as the "North Canal", remains at its original width of 40m. A walking path that runs alongside it is lined with 63 gas lamps and stone warehouses that have been preserved in their original form while being repurposed as restaurants and other facilities. As the sun sets, the warehouses are lit up with gas lamps, giving the area a completely different feel from the daytime. - Access

Sapporo Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium Mt. Okura is famous for being the site of the ski jump event for the 1972 Winter Olympics. There's an observation deck at the summit, and a fun attraction is the ability to view the huge jump from the perspective of an Olympic skier. The deck also offers a panoramic view of not only all Sapporo, but also the Ishikari Plain and Ishikari Bay. The stadium is an all-weather facility, so you might even encounter athletes as they practice all year round. It isn't just the view from the top of the jump that's impressive, either. The way it looks from below is also breathtaking. The Sapporo Olympic Museum is located at the bottom of the jump and has a lot of historical winter sports memorabilia, as well as an attraction that lets you experience a simulated ski jump. - Access

Sapporo Beer Garden The red star painted on a brick chimney is the symbol of Sapporo Beer as well as the development of Hokkaido. The uniforms of the Development Commission and pioneer soldiers once had the same shining star, much like their flags emblazoned with red stars. The historic red brick Kaitakushikan building was originally built to be a sugar factory in 1890, and then was used as a malt factory until 1963. The woods on the northern side of the mountain include a primeval forest that takes on a different magical feeling in each season, and has been designated as a National Natural Monument. Takino Suzuran Hillside Park Hokkaido's only national government park, its vast nature includes Ashiribetsu Falls, from which Takino gets its name.
